چکیده

This paper aims to examine the theoretical context of the synchronic and diachronic versions of the Dutch Book argument. The paper begins with a brief characterization of the significance of making an interpretation of the theory of probability after Kolmogorov’s contribution. Following this, the core of an intended model – i.e., subjective probability or degrees of belief – will be described as part of the Bayesian doctrine. The second part of this paper includes the details of the Synchronic and Diachronic Dutch Book theorems and arguments. Finally, a criticism of each of these arguments is presented. On the one hand, Hajék’s parody of the argument by a symmetric Good Book argument will show a fundamental flaw in the traditional argument. On the other hand, a paradox presented by van Fraassen concerning the Diachronic argument will emphasize that even if it follows from Bayesianism that we should update our beliefs by conditionalization on evidence, the strict endorsement of the principle of conditionalization commits us to accept a seemingly irrational principle. With these two criticisms in mind, it is hoped that our susceptibility to being Dutch Booked by Dutch Book arguments will be to some extent diminished.

Uncertainty and Probability

This paper examines the relationship between probability theory and reasoning in uncertainty, and argues that (contra opposing views) probability theory does have a place in reasoning in uncertainty, but that its place is more restricted than many of its advocates claim. Two major theses are argued for. (1) Reasoning from probabilities works well in domains which permit a clear analysis in term...

Interpreting probability in causal mod- els for cancer

ab st ract . How should probabilities be interpreted in causal models in the social and health sciences? In this paper we take a step towards answering this question by investigating the case of cancer in epidemiology and arguing that the objective Bayesian interpretation is most appropriate in this domain. After introducing the problem in §1 and giving an overview of causal analysis in the soc...

Interpreting entropy as a prior probability suggests a universal but “purely empirical” measure of “goodness of fit”. This allows statistical techniques to be used in situations where the correct theory — and not just its parameters — is still unknown. As developed illustratively for least-squares nonlinear regression, the measure proves to be a transformation of the R statistic. Unlike the lat...
